The novel tells the story of Mario and Maisha and their unlikely friendship. The book is directed to students age 9 to 12 and will be distributed to over 4,500+ fourth/fifth graders for summer reading. In this unusual, enlightening collaboration between Margo Perin and Community Works/West, men and women who have been incarcerated in San Francisco County Jail tell their life stories. As the writers’ authentic voices ring out from past and present prison experiences, they call on us to shine a light into the shadows of our own lives and begin a process of healing that benefits us all.
